What Rooted in STEM can offer

Connect with students regularly, and assist in completing homework, checking for accuracy, and solving problems
Build executive functioning skills around checking for assignments, time management, completion, and turning in assignments
Conflict avoidance- having someone else to support homework allows for students and parents to better enrich their relationship- and not battle homework
Utilize homework to enrich and continue to build skills, and try alternative strategies for problem solving

Apply student interests to engage in skill building in an area of need determined by assessments, Lindsey, parents, and teacher recommendations
Attempt different approaches to similar types of problems to find a best fit strategy
Connect skill building with homework
Practice skills in a low risk environment, with the opportunity to get things wrong, and keep trying, building confidence and resilience
Personalized curriculum based on student current skills, and desired growth

Meets students where they are, and builds curriculum based on individual needs to foster growth
Builds upon what students are learning in academic classes, or an area of interest student wants to pursue outside of what they’ll learn during the school year
Connects with standards based skills student will be learning in current grade level, or future grade level
Develops students academic skills in math, reading, or science, while also investigating an area of interest
Engages student in mathematical and literacy skills related to their own interests in order to increase students skill building and engagement
No need to choose just one option, Lindsey can work to implement curriculum that supports students in building skills, tackling homework, and enriching their education.

Examples of work with students

For a student that really loves marine biology, but struggles with concepts around graphs, data analysis, and data collection, I’ve created a lesson where we identify creatures in a tidepool, using a field guide, and then create a population census, and show multiple ways of displaying data.
For another student who loves trains, and struggles to show their work and mathematical thinking, we’ve built a digital train station model, designated trains for specific trips, and organized a schedule. We were able to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, space, and organizing data.
For another student who is passionate about animals, but struggles to connect fractions and ratios to real world concepts, we utilized a graph of coyote and rabbit population cycles to discuss and practice ratios and fraction math by utilizing predator and prey population ratios.
In addition to relating skills to topics that students are interested in, we’ll also work on mastering specific skills through practice, and real world concepts.
