The homework battle is real, and I empathize with you parents. Many times as a teacher during parent conferences, I would hear from parents; “why will they get the work done with you, but not with me?” “They say they are doing the homework, but you’re saying they’re not getting it done at all?” “It’s such a fight to get them to do their homework, and I don’t always have the energy to push them.” “I don’t understand the homework, how am I even supposed to help them?”
It’s hard to be the parent, the rule enforcer, the educator, and continue to try and get a dinner on the table for your family in the evenings. I get it. It can be even harder in the pandemic age where you may have had to be the educator to get them online during the shutdowns, or coach them to get their work done.
It helps to have a buffer, someone like me. As a buffer, I can push your student, help them build skills, and help prevent the homework meltdowns, and you can enjoy your dinner with your student without having just fought a battle. As a teacher, I understand how the new common core math is taught, and it is very different from the way we all grew up learning math. I have experience from several years of teaching it, and tutoring with it. It’s really helpful for developing number sense, identifying why the numbers work together, and why the algorithms work, because the students are learning the process behind it. But it’s definitely challenging to go back and try and learn it to be able to help your student out. This is where I step in. With my experience, I can help your student with their homework, build skills they might be struggling with, build confidence in their work, and most of all, lessen the homework battles you might be facing.
As a former teacher, I also understand the challenges with reading, and that sometimes, it can be REALLY hard to spark that joy of reading. We can work on reading in many ways! We can read books they’re interested in, read about topics they enjoy, or even just going over word lists, and playing reading games can be a way that your child gets their 30 minutes of reading per day, while not really knowing they’re spending 30 minutes of time reading!
It’s difficult to be a human and get your needs met, while raising a small human, and meeting all of their needs. Let me help you, I can help with the homework. After the homework is done, you get to spend time with your little human in a more enjoyable way, rather than feeling the anger and frustration from the evening’s homework battle.
